Reno Volleyball Festival

In the past, the volleyball festival was held at UC-Davis, California and was simply referred to as “Davis”; however, the event is now held in Reno, Nevada but is still the same festival with the same sponsors. The Reno Volleyball Festival is the largest women’s event in the world, with about nine-hundred teams competing in different volleyball categories from twelve and under, to eighteen and under.

The Reno Volleyball festival takes places in the last week of June. Teams who join the festival usually play in either the morning or afternoon shift; with each team playing at least three matches every day. Frequently, the teams play within double elimination bracket on one or more days of the event; this bracket plays make the event a more thrilling competition. After four days of pool play, bracket play and challenge matches, the top eight teams in every group age vie for the championship, while the rest of the teams are off. Every one but the top eight teams in every group finish playing for the Divisional Championships.

The Reno Volleyball Festival has also been a very effective recruiting event for athletes, as it is attended by very large number of college coaches. Its festive atmosphere and wonderfully run event, is recognized as a truly prestigious affair. So how did this event come to be? It started with the Epperson family, Anna and Lara, playing for their junior high school program in 1981 and for the Davis Volleyball Club, which raised money for the girls to play in Omaha, Nebraska in the Junior Olympics. In December of the same year, to promote the volleyball program, the Epperson’s helped organize an exhibition with the local media. Because of the success of the organized event, Bernice Epperson was recommended to Gary Coldberg to help manage the Junior Olympics in 1982.

The regional tournament started at Davis and Knoxville, then the finals was held in Santa Barbara. Working with San Jose State University as the boy’s site and Santa Clara University as the girl’s site, the Epperson’s held the first Volleyball Festival in 1984. The Volleyball Festival put on its first all-girls tournament in 1986, and since the success of the “Davis” the previous year, the 1986 tournament was held in Davis. The growth of the event during that time was extraordinary with participants from 120 teams total in 1985 to girl’s teams of 190 in 1986.

The event’s expansion to the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in 2004 manifested the start of a new era of the volleyball festival. The Reno Volleyball Festival today offers The Largest Annual Sporting Event in the World, National Junior Invitational Championships, Girls Teams from All Over the United States, Guaranteed 13 Matches in Five Days, Competition at Multiple Levels, Fabulous Opening Ceremony, and Nationally Televised Finals.
